Ladies and Gentlemen
This is Vida Mehrannia, the spouse of Professor Ahmadreza Djalali, a Swedish-Iranian medical scholar. Six years ago, Ahmadreza was invited by Iranian Academic Centers as a guest for scientific purposes but during this trip he was detained arbitrarily, and has since then been kept in solitary confinement under torture, denied the right of access to a lawyer for the first 7 months of his detention and forced to dictate confessions under extreme threats to kill his two young children.
The arbitrary death sentence against Ahmadreza stems from his refusal to collaborate with Iranian authorities in non-scientific activities. He was very clear that he is just a scientist, not a spy for Iran’s intelligence.
Thousands of individuals and institutions worldwide have shown their support to save my husband’s life, including 150 Noble laureates, and two resolutions by the European Union. I am endlessly grateful for all these actions, but until Ahmadreza is free it is not enough.
As a wife and the mother of two children, I appeal to you to take action for the release of an innocent scientist and father, Ahmadreza Djalali.
